The Toolbox encourages the user to explore 9 sites. Five of the sites are based on the constructed National Environment Centre's Learningscape and the other four are actual sites in differing geographic locations.
Learners can move around each site and try to uncover any significant items. They can 'pick up' likely objects and turn them around to inspect their features carefully. At each site and for each object there is an experienced Aboriginal Site officer to give information, advice and encouragement.
The project is also task oriented. The learner has extensive Site Surveys to complete for each site as well as sites in their own area. They also have to design and cost a Learningscape in their own country.
